How the scoring actually works — explained clearly, without exposing the instrument.

This page explains our approach at the level appropriate for a public audience. We do not publish exact questions, scoring formulas, or answer keys — publishing those would let people answer strategically, undermining the instrument for everyone.

The approach

Ten things worth understanding about IWPA scoring

One model, five scoring systems

Work Personality and Emotional Intelligence use trait-based scoring. Applied Cognitive Ability uses objective accuracy scoring — each item has a correct or best answer. Occupational Interest uses comparative preference scoring, producing a ranked profile rather than a level. Response Quality uses integrity and confidence scoring. Treating all five the same way would weaken the instrument, so we don't.

Reverse scoring

Some statements are worded so that agreement indicates a lower level of the trait being measured. Those items are recoded to point in the same direction as the rest of their scale before anything is summed — a standard, necessary step that keeps items which are (deliberately) worded in opposite directions from cancelling each other out incorrectly.

Forced-choice items, as supplementary evidence

A small number of items ask you to choose which of several statements is most, and least, like you. These items refine a trait score — they contribute a real but deliberately smaller share of the final result than direct-response items, so no single forced-choice item can dominate a subscale.

Situational judgment scoring

Realistic workplace scenarios are scored on an ordered scale of response quality — not simply right or wrong — because a reasonable-but-imperfect response should score differently from a genuinely risky or avoidant one. Every option is judged on its own actual wording, never a mechanical pattern.

Objective cognitive scoring

Verbal, numerical, and logical reasoning items each have one objectively correct answer, scored for accuracy. This domain is deliberately framed as applied workplace reasoning, not general intelligence or IQ.

RIASEC ranking, not averaging

Occupational interest is never collapsed into a single number. Six themes are scored, ranked against each other, and reported as a Holland Code and a full interest profile — because this domain measures the direction of interest, not a level of ability.

A dedicated response-quality layer

Several checks — consistency between related items, response style, and attentiveness — combine into a single confidence read. This read never adds or subtracts points from any other score; it tells you how much confidence the rest of the profile deserves.

Deterministic and versioned

The same responses, scored against the same assessment and scoring version, always produce the same result. Every profile identifies the assessment version, scoring version, and profile version it was generated from — so a result is always reproducible and auditable.

AI-supported narrative interpretation

Once scoring is complete, AI may help turn the numbers into clear, personalized narrative — grounded in your actual scores, never inventing a claim the scoring doesn't support. See our full AI and Psychometric Assessments boundary.

Future norm governance

Percentile comparison against a reference population requires an approved norm sample — a defined process covering sample size, fairness review, and versioning. Until a specific norm group meets that bar, we say so plainly rather than showing an invented percentile.

Built on established research constructs

IWPA's domains are built on well-studied construct categories — situational judgment, occupational interest (RIASEC), structured behavioural evidence — not invented from nothing. That research describes these construct categories in general; it does not by itself validate IWPA's specific items or scoring, which is a separate, ongoing responsibility we hold ourselves to.

What we do not claim

Responsible use starts with clear limits

IWPA is a serious psychometric instrument, not a diagnostic or clinical tool. We are explicit about what it does not do.
